Hyphen Health First to Pass Australia’s New Sexual Health Check

SYDNEY, 22nd April 2026 – Australians are flocking to online sexual health services for speed, privacy and convenience, but until now there has been no clear way to know which providers can be trusted.

Today that changes, with the launch of Sexual Health Check, Australia’s first national accreditation for digital sexual health providers.

Developed by ASHM (formerly the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine) and endorsed by State and Territory Government Departments of Health, the Sexual Health Check introduces the first consistent framework to assess the safety, reliability and appropriateness of online care.

Hyphen Health, Australia’s largest digital-first sexual health provider, has been named the first and only services to receive accreditation across its clinics Stigma Health, Hey Fella and PrEP Health.

Hyphen Health Chief Medical Officer Dr Leigh Barlow said the accreditation introduces much-needed transparency for patients.

“People are already choosing online sexual health because it’s faster, more private and easier to fit into real life,” Dr Barlow said.

“But not every service is built the same. This gives patients a clear signal about who’s delivering safe, evidence-based care and who’s just responding to and taking advantage of demand.”

The Sexual Health Check assesses providers against a range of criteria, including clinical safety, transparency, price and the appropriateness and cost of testing – addressing concerns around over-servicing and inconsistent practices across the sector.

ASHM Deputy CEO Jessica Michaels said the accreditation provides a practical way for consumers to navigate the space.

“We’ve seen examples of services online that are recommending tests that aren’t required, or are charging unreasonably high costs – and we want to help make sure that people’s concerns about their sexual health aren’t being taken advantage of.”

Hyphen Health has been delivering online sexual health services since 2015 and is Australia’s largest online sexual health clinic group, supporting more than 95,000 Australians and facilitating over 5,000 tests each month.

“Online sexual health isn’t going anywhere,” Dr Barlow said.

“The focus now is making sure it’s done properly, so people can access care quickly, privately, and with confidence in the standard of care they’re receiving.”
